ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

A. Be the age of majority, or older, in their province of residence (British Columbia or Alberta) as of the STORYHIVE Summer crew application deadline date, before midnight on March 24, 2023.

B. Apply with a co-creator/friend (applications are open to teams of two). If you choose to apply as an individual we will pair you up with someone. We highly recommend applying with a friend so you can split the duties and responsibilities of attending meetings, doing outreach, cold calling, researching, interviewing, carrying equipment, shooting, managing streams, editing, moderating, etc. This is an intense content creation journey and it is much better to work with a friend.

C. Make a simple short pitch video shot on your smartphone that tells us about you and your teammate! Do not spend money or resources on the production value of this video. Instead, focus on the content of your pitch. The elevator pitch is one of the most important ways a creator sells their ideas. Tell us why you are the best person or team. Enter the public YouTube link to your 60-second pitch video. Get inspiration on how to make a compelling pitch video here [https://www.storyhive.com/how-to/a-strong-storyhive-application#pitch_video_0]. Please note: You must own the rights to the images, footage, and music used in your pitch video.

FAQ

What is Summer Crew?

Summer Crew 2023 is an intensive 14-week program where participants receive microgrants, training, and livestreaming equipment to showcase their community. No experience is required. We want to help empower you to make connections and uplift the people, places, and events that showcase your community to our audience. Apply with a friend/co-creator or go solo and we will pair you up, to produce livestream coverage of your city (or combined region – see eligibility) over the course of the summer. You decide the stories, we provide the gear and financial support.

What is the deadline to apply for STORYHIVE Summer Crew?

Applications must be received before midnight on March 24, 2023. Selected candidates will be notified on the week of April 11, 2023.

Do I have to apply with my friend?

We highly encourage you to work with someone you are comfortable being creative and professional with for the length of the contract. Having the support of one other person will be vital to the success of your live coverage given the prep work ahead of each shoot and the handling of all the gear provided. After running one version of this program in 2022, we suggest finding the right partner and friend from the very beginning at the moment of application. You can, however, apply solo and we'll do our best to pair you up! Nonetheless, it’s more fun to hang with your bestie all summer, isn’t it?

Does my friend/teammate need to also fill out an application if I have already filled one out?

Yes, you and your teammate need to fill out separate applications. The STORYHIVE website provides creators access to tools specific to each program. If selected we want to be able to provide you and your partner with the same experience, such as the possibility of applying separately to other STORYHIVE programs in the future (Editions or Voices)! Behind the scenes, the STORYHIVE team will link together your applications for Summer Crew as long as you name your partner and your Crew's team name the same across both applications. Applicants will be judged together based on the strength of the team. You will not be asked to break up your team at any point. Applicants who apply together stay together.

Can my partner and I just copy the same Crew and Series Information between our two applications?

Yes, please keep the Crew Name, Logline, Synopsis, Monthly Plan, Inclusion Statement, and Pitch Video the same across both partners' applications. However, anything that is an individual's personal biographical information (Address, Phone, Experience) should be unique to each applicant.

Are applications limited to people who reside in the listed regions only?

Yes, for regions that detail two or more cities each team member must be from one of the cities in the region you are applying for and you must be willing to travel to the other(s) to complete the allotted amount of coverage required in each area. Perhaps you have a friend or family member in Lethbridge?

Is there anything I should know about the website and application process?

Applicants take note that you and your partner must apply individually to this program even when in the same team/crew. In your application you must name each other as partners, AND write down the same team name. Behind the scenes we will link your applications together. The most important part is to be thorough and complete it fully. We recommend you start your application early, then look through what else is required. We encourage you not to leave an application open to the last possible minute. Consider sending your application a day or a week in advance. If there are any issues or questions you might have, reach out to storyhive@telus.com.

Who is the Project Lead of a Summer Crew livestream series?

Unlike our other STORYHIVE programs, both members of the crew are Project Leads responsible for their livestream series. Project Leads hold copyright over their content, both will be signing Grant Agreements, and are recipients of a microgrant for the duration of the program.

Can we hire a professional crew and editor?

The grant you receive to do Summer Crew is for you to use during the program, if you need to pay a professional it will come out of your grant. This allows you to use it for hiring help. But we instead encourage you to learn every step of the production program. Producing, hosting, shooting, editing, documenting, delivering, etc. You are here to learn and take your first steps in content creation.

Do I have to be in front of the camera? Or behind the camera?

You can be in front or behind the camera. There are two of you. Someone has to be a host, and the other has to shoot. You can switch it up every week as well. However, you two choose to split the responsibilities is totally up to you

Any advice about choosing a Crew Name?

Come up with the best team name that represent your crew and your region! Something creative and catchy for your two-person team. Ideally, your team name is also the name of your livestream series. Think local and include the name of your community or region in the name. (e.g. "Unique Minds of the Okanagan", "Living Full in Vancouver", "R and G in the Seven 80"). Anything crude or hateful as a team name will not be accepted.

Where do I fill out a budget for my Summer Crew livestream series application?

Unlike our other STORYHIVE programs, there is no budget requirement to apply for Summer Crew. However, successful applicants will be responsible for the proper management of food, gas, and travel allotment. Outside of your per diems, any outside expenses must be approved by your STORYHIVE Program Manager. You must be able to track and budget accordingly for each livestream shoot.

How elaborate should my 60-second Pitch Video be?

Create a simple short pitch video shot on your smartphone that tells us about you and your teammate! Do not spend money or resources on the production value of this video. Instead, focus on the content of your pitch. The elevator pitch is one of the most important ways a creator sells their ideas. Tell us why you are the best person or team for this program? Enter the public YouTube link to your 60-second pitch video on the URL field. Get inspiration on how to make a compelling pitch video here [https://www.storyhive.com/how-to/a-strong-storyhive-application#pitch_video_0]. You and your partner can submit the same 60-second pitch video if you are applying as a team.

What is a Monthly Content Plan?

Your plan must include a list of events, people, and topics you would like to cover in your community for the month(s) ahead. This can be in the form of a list, calendar, or table. We are looking for a mix of creative approaches and diversity to the stories you are covering for your community at large. At STORYHIVE, we value diversity and inclusion. Accordingly, we support racial diversity and gender parity by ensuring all projects include self-identified females and/or non-binary persons in your roster of interviewees. A rough draft/first draft plan is all that's needed for the application and we will review this together at a later date if your team is selected. Your plan will NOT be made public on your Project Page. You and your partner can submit the same plan if you are applying as a team. For the application, you can upload a PDF version of your content plan for the month of May (maximum of 3 pages). If selected you will be asked to draft and submit content plans for the next months of the program.

How will successful projects be selected for STORYHIVE Summer Crew 2023?

A Selection Committee will review all eligible applicants and select which ones receive funding. When making their selections, the Selection Committee will consider several factors, including, but not limited to, the submitted application, the impact of the grant on the content creators, and the importance of the story to the content creator’s community of residence.

What will each selected project receive for STORYHIVE Summer Crew 2023?

Each successful team will receive one of 14 available microgrants (available to BC and Alberta residents only) and equipment from TELUS to produce a livestream show that is a locally reflective interview-based series consisting of 14 episodes (each episode is a minimum of 2 hours in length each). Each crew will receive training and equipment to learn the ropes of livestream technology. And each crew will also receive an iPhone 14 to keep after the successful completion of the program and delivery of all video assets. The 14 successful crews and their series will also receive distribution to 1M+ subscribers on select TELUS platforms.

Do crews get to keep the equipment/gear kit?

Each crew gets to keep the iPhone 14 provided. The rest of the gear in the kit is the property of TELUS and will have to be returned by the end of the program in August 2023.

My partner and I are already content creators with some experience, and our crew is well-equipped already to stream. Can we use our personal gear?

The kit provided has been thoughtfully put together by our team to work with livestreaming. This same kit was tested and used successfully last year. You are welcome to supplement the kit provided by STORYHIVE with gear of your own. You are responsible for your own equipment, as well as the complete return of TELUS's kit. We cannot guarantee your gear will work with what we have provided. It is your responsibility to test the gear ahead of any interview, including testing any of your equipment for incompatibilities.

I read that piece of gear "X" by a "famous camera company" is really good. Can STORYHIVE purchase this for my equipment kit?

Purchases of any equipment outside of the provided kit, are considered an outside expense and must be approved by your STORYHIVE Program Manager. Any gear approved and purchased this way will be the property of TELUS. However, the grant we provide you is yours and can be used towards personal equipment purchases.

I read you need good internet speeds, but my internet is slow. What can I do?

Our recommendation is to have an internet speed between 50 Mbps and 75 Mbps. You will need the internet to receive and send email, do research, use Google Suite, and have access to your remote editing station. First, determine your internet speed by visiting www.speedtest.net. Slow internet speeds will not make you ineligible to apply and be selected. Once selected as a crew member, we recommend you speak to your STORYHIVE Project Manager about your internet speed.

What can participants expect from the training in this program?

We will train each crew on the basics of interviewing, livestreaming, the Business of Livestreaming, using the gear kit (including the iPhone, Larix app, Vidflex, and Remote workstation), moderating content, editing with Adobe Premiere, and delivering to a broadcaster. This will also be included in the Creator Kit provided.

How much travel will I be doing?

In your application please select the potential communities that you are able to produce content for. You must be able to produce content for and travel between these communities as needed. You should expect to be doing a lot of travel within the communities you have indicated.

What does it mean to be locally reflective?

For projects to be locally reflective, they must focus on people, topics, or events that are relevant and connected to the applicant’s community and region of residence. (Note: The applicants’ residences must be one of the communities eligible for STORYHIVE funding. Please refer to the list of communities that are eligible for STORYHIVE Summer Crew before applying).

Whom should I interview for Summer Crew?

Think local. Speak to your next-door business. Interview a community festival director. Learn a new skill from a craftsman. While we love your friends and family as much as you do, we are looking for you to get out of your comfort zone.

What rights do I need for any materials used in my Coverage?

If selected, Crews must be able to provide a complete, clean, and unencumbered chain of title (proof of rights ownership) for all of the livestreams they produce and record, and must enter into a Grant Agreement with TELUS STORYHIVE. The applicant must have and retain all necessary release forms and the rights to all the music (including synchronization and master use rights) and all other material including logos and signage, interviews, performances, etc. in your recordings.

How many hours will I spend in prep vs. how many hours will I spend livestreaming?

That depends on how much experience you have preparing multiple projects and organizing your reporting plans. There will be a portion of your week structured by our STORYHIVE team to ensure you are meeting your deliveries, the rest of the time you will be in the field streaming and engaging with your community. A rough estimate of 50/50 is the average.

Why do I need to do a separate delivery of video recordings to STORYHIVE?

You will be livestreaming to your own crew's personalized Vidflex page from where you and your audience will be able to watch the streams in the moment. After the fact it is your responsibility to download the file(s) of your live shows and interviews from Vidflex (or directly from your phone) and re-package them as a single video compilation file for acceptance into TELUS OptikTV. For it to be accepted by STORYHIVE you must include a variety of important elements like descriptions and artwork of your series in your delivery. Before you deliver you must moderate and re-edit your own shows so the file fits the rating and content moderation requirements outlined above. This include (removal of swear words, blurring of logos, and others as necessary). Refer to your agreement and creator kit for more information on how to deliver.

I’m a STORYHIVE Alumni and have experience making films, but livestreaming is new to me. Can I still apply?

Absolutely! Livestreaming is a creative skill and its foundations are in television, filmmaking, and broadcasting (screen-based industries). Show us what you’ve got in your application and maybe you'll be the one!

I'm a Summer Crew alumnus. Can I apply again for 2023?

Absolutely, as long as you still fit all the requirements. Just be aware that previous acceptance to Summer Crew 2022 does not guarantee acceptance into Summer Crew 2023.

I’m currently the recipient of an ongoing funded project through STORYHIVE or TELUS Originals, can I still apply?

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to fund those currently being funded in other TELUS programs. However, we do encourage you to consider applying for a future iteration of this program.

I am currently applying to STORYHIVE Anniversary Edition and considering also applying for the Voices 2023 program. I notice Summer Crew 2023 will be done before these two begin. Can I apply? Will there be any conflict if I am accepted to both? Do I risk becoming ineligible to any program if I apply to all?

No, you will not be ineligible for applying to all programs at the same time. While we cannot fund someone currently being funded, we can select someone for Summer Crew, before they engage with the STORYHIVE Anniversary Edition and / or Voices 2023. This is because these programs will not start their production journeys until the Fall of 2023.

I am an international living in Canada under a student, worker, or visitor visa / permit, can I apply?

Unfortunately, CRTC guidelines ask us to provide funding towards Canadian citizens and permanent residents only.

I am a parent and my children want to be a part of the Summer Crew. Can we apply?

Because we are providing a grant for two people, the participants receiving the grant should be of 18 or over, so children cannot apply directly. While your children can support you and be involved, as a parents (or guardians) you would be solely responsible for all equipment, tasks and deliverables. However, this program is intensive, mostly self-guided, and could take up a lot of your time and effort.

I am thinking of applying with a friend that lives in a different province / my friend lives in in another city. Can we apply as a pair?

In situations where you and your partner don't live in the same community, we highly encourage you to consider finding a teammate that you have a close relationship with and you can be accountable to each other. Naturally, it will be easier to work with someone that lives in the same community and province as yourself, and will make your Summer experience stronger. Another difficulty is that we only provide 1 gear kit per team, so sending the kit over different provinces and communities will be a huge challenge for your team. You would have to indicate how you can cover both communities. Travel might be involved for some crews, but all travel must be approved by your STORYHIVE PM and within reason. Constant weekly flying between Calgary and Vancouver, for example, is likely not going to be within reason of this program.

Tell me more about the travel opportunities! Where are we going and what are the details?

Travel is optional. Every year we support a number of communities in BC and AB. We will know more about who can travel (if at all) once all applications are in. More info will be provided to the selected crews before they confirm participation. Tell us where you think you can reasonably travel to. Full list of communities can be found online.

When will I know if my Crew is selected?

You will be contacted at the latest by April 11, 2023, at the latest to start our collaboration on May 1, 2023.

If you have any further questions please contact storyhive@telus.com
