A recovering alcoholic and an unstable artist face off their chaotic relationship before everything crumbles around them
Still Water is an intimate drama that explores the dysfunctional relationship between a recovering alcoholic and an effervescent, unstable artist. The characters represent opposing mental states of quiet recovery and forceful denial. Cole struggles through unforgiving sobriety and social anxiety. But nothing pains him more than seeing his girlfriend Charlotte spiral toward her own destruction. They share an irrevocable connection but cannot see the difference between healthy or unhealthy affection. Both struggle with substance abuse but are also plagued by romantic and emotional dependency. Their experiences represent human nature in the most volatile and naked sense, challenging our preconceived notions about dependency, connection and recovery.
We are honoured to be working with an incredible group of collaborators based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. Many of our team members are recent graduates of the Capilano University Motion Picture Arts and Acting Programs.
The costume design for Charlotte is derived from the quintessential 90's grunge girl. Her fashion is cobbled together from thrift shops and exceptional taste. Her wardrobe includes a dozen pairs of ripped jeans and jean shorts, paired with greyscale graphic tees, lace bralets, dark plaid shirts and statement jewelry pieces as pictured above. Many of her favourite shirts and sweaters are repurposed items from her boyfriend's closet.
The physical world is entirely defined by our lead female character, Charlotte. Her passion and dependency are reflected in all of our visuals. The shared home is decorated with vintage trash and tokens from the beach. The colour scheme for the is cool tones found in nature with the saturation intensified. The featured palette includes ocean tones with azure blue and mint green accents.
During the writing process, our screenwriter CJ McGillivray referenced conflicting visuals of dependency, romance and chaos. She was drawn to images of excess within simple, sparse surroundings.
The soundtrack for Still Water will feature incredible music by local progressive alternative rock band, HAWKING. The Vancouver band combines powerful, melodic vocals with surgically tight, interlocking guitarwork and adventurous rhythms to create a sound as potent and enigmatic as it is catchy. The music is perfectly suited for the raucous opening party scene.
