STORYHIVE is seeking crew members to produce locally reflective livestream video series for On Location 2026.
Kickstart your online presence, jumpstart your broadcasting journey and showcase your community with the TELUS STORYHIVE 2026 On Location program. Focused on live streaming community stories, STORYHIVE On Location will be an intensive 10-month program where crews from different regions receive microgrants, equipment, training, post production and distribution support on TELUS Optik TV, Stream+ and STORYHIVE’s YouTube channel. Each project must include episodic, locally reflective Livestreamed content. All projects must have synchronized audio and live video over YouTube.

Livestreams have a runtime of 1 hour each.
TELUS will provide mentorship through a dedicated editing team that will help you re-edit your content for Broadcast on Optik TV On Demand. Each hour-long live stream will be edited down to a 30 minute made for TV version.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must:
A. Be the age of majority, or older, in their province of residence (British Columbia or Alberta) as of the STORYHIVE On Location crew submission deadline date, before closing time.
B. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
C. Make a simple short pitch video shot on your smartphone that tells us about you and your teammate! Do not spend money or resources on the production value of this video. Instead, focus on the content of your pitch. The elevator pitch is one of the most important ways a creator sells their ideas. Tell us why you are the best person or team. Enter the public YouTube link to your 60-second pitch video. Please note: You must own the rights to the images, footage, and music used in your pitch video.
D. Applications are open to teams of two. We highly recommend applying with a friend so you can split the duties and responsibilities of attending meetings, doing outreach, cold calling, researching, interviewing, carrying equipment, shooting, managing streams, editing, moderating, etc. This is an intense content creation journey and it is much better to work with a friend.
E. Able to produce content dedicated for your community of residence. Crews may also have to be available to travel between communities, as needed and when assigned by STORYHIVE.

F. Be available from Oct 1 - July 17, 2026, and commit casual and flex time work. While we don't want you to do work above and beyond those hours, you can do so;
G. Be available to commit odd hours (weekends, evenings, and early mornings, depending on livestreaming schedule);
H. Own or have access to a laptop or computer for cloud-based work (e.g. this includes accessing our cloud editing software and Google documents) and have access to an internet speed connection between 50 Mbps to 75 Mbps. NOTE: If you do not have proper computer access or internet speed, please send us a note to see if we can accommodate you. Please test your internet speeds ahead of the application through www.speedtest.net.
I. Be able to deliver your program, after having livestreamed, moderated for content, and edited in a format that can be used for distribution on IPTV and online (i.e. meet technical requirements for delivery for both video on demand and online) Note: submitted videos must be in a High Definition format.
NOTE: Preference is given to those who own or have access to a vehicle as some travel may be required (Business Use insurance recommended).

WHAT TOPICS AND GUESTS CAN I COVER?
Representation matters. We encourage all content creators to ensure that they are engaging a diverse cross-section of people, places, events, and happenings in their region, including communities that traditionally face barriers to representation on screen. We prioritize diversity and inclusion, and your application should reflect that you are committed to covering a plurality of voices. You are expected to strive for fair and balanced coverage which always obtains appropriate and legal consent to livestream and film.
Present fair and balanced views, with all stakeholders on an issue fairly represented.
Be in compliance with all laws, regulations, and policies governing content, taste, community reflection, and diversity of voices including the Broadcasting Act, CRTC Best Practice Code, and other relevant Canadian legislation pertaining to the nature of acceptable content (please consult the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council website for further information).
Qualify for a G or PG rating; must not contravene the law, promote hatred or contempt towards other individuals or groups; must not contain obscene or profane language or imagery or false or misleading factual content.

APPLICANT’S SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Passion for showcasing your community through storytelling and reporting.
Ability to develop and manage a multi-month project and follow a weekly delivery schedule.
Preference is given to those with experience livestreaming or creating user-generated content (e.g. presence on YouTube; Instagram Live; TikTok Live; Podcasting; Twitch [not gaming]; or recorded experience interviewing, hosting, or anchoring live events).
Experience with creating reports, budgets and tracking expenses.
GRANT DESCRIPTION
Each Grant will be unique to each Project Lead based on budget allocation per community.
Every payment of the grant will be divided and disbursed monthly pending the successful delivery of recorded and livestreamed video assets.
Work at your own pace! Tasks include but are not limited to interviewing, doing outreach, researching people and locations to shoot, checking and caring for your gear, reporting to the STORYHIVE team, data entry, travel, and content planning, working on your brand, etc.
Your contract includes a limited monthly allowable expenses that must be approved by your STORYHIVE Program Manager.

LIVESTREAM GEAR KIT
Each crew will be provided with a kit of audiovisual equipment to be utilized during the duration of the entire program. We have designed this kit to be as user-friendly as possible and recommend you use all its pieces per training. It is the responsibility of each crew to return the kit to STORYHIVE at the end of the program.

POST PRODUCTION
During the entire length of the program every live stream episode delivered successfully will be edited to a Broadcast friendly version that will be shared to viewers on Optik TV and YouTube. STORYHIVE will provide the post-production services to every Project Lead by pairing them each to an in-house TELUS professional Video Editor who will edit the content from an hour long uninterrupted livestream to a 30 minute broadcast version.
The responsibilities of the Project Lead during post production period are:
Communicate with the Video Editor to handover the live stream video and any other assets associated with it
Review rough cuts and provide notes for revision to the Video Editor
Reply in a timely manner, within one week of receiving the rough cut
Project Leads will have only one round of revisions with the Video Editor.
Project Leads are the owners of their copyright, so this 30 minute broadcast cut also belongs to the Project Lead.
Project Leads are allowed to make their own cut down versions of their live streams for social media and promotional purposes, but this does not guarantee that STORYHIVE will accept other versions in lieu of Broadcast Cut edited by TELUS Video Editors.
TRAINING & SUPPORT
In addition to the above, we want to set up each crew for success. Over the course of the month of October we will set each crew up with training modules, we’ll guide you through what you need to know about planning and producing your ideas. Topics covered will include:
Overview of the equipment kit you’ll be using
How to track and budget within your allowable expenses for each month
What consent and releases you’ll need
How to represent STORYHIVE in your community
Best practices to manage the livestream you’re responsible for; and
How to navigate your delivery and assets for YouTube and Optik TV

FAQ
Are applications limited to people who reside in the listed regions only?
Each member of your team must reside in at least one of the regions and communities you plan to cover. Additionally, if you are offered the opportunity to travel you must be willing to travel to other communities to fulfill your TELUS STORYHIVE agreement.
Is there anything I should know about the website and application process?
We recommend you start your application early, then look through what else is required. We encourage you not to leave an application open to the last possible minute. Consider sending your application a day or a week in advance. If there are any issues or questions you might have, reach out to storyhive@telus.com.
Who is the Project Lead of an On Location livestream series?
Project Leads hold copyright over their content and are ultimately responsible to attend all meetings with STORYHIVE, produce, manage and deliver their content to satisfy the terms of the agreement. Project Leads can work individually with volunteers or as a team of two. In such instances, both Project leads will be signing a grant agreement and the grant will be split evenly between the two leads.
Can we hire a professional crew and editor?
The microgrant provided for STORYHIVE On Location is intended to support your production needs throughout the program as you deem necessary. Our primary objective is to empower you to learn content creation independently and at your own speed before considering external help. While you may use your grant to hire professional production or camera assistance if required, we strongly advocate for first learning every stage of the process yourself—from producing and hosting to shooting and final delivery. This program is designed to facilitate your growth as a creator. Please note that following the initial disbursement, subsequent grant payments are issued only upon the successful delivery of each episode.
Do I have to be in front of the camera? Or behind the camera?
Yes, we expect every Project Lead to be an on-camera host personality. You can also be behind the camera. We advise that you work with someone or find volunteers. Volunteers are only approved to work behind the camera and not to be on air hosts. When there are two of you, someone can host and the other can record. You can switch it up as well so both get a chance in front and behind the camera. However, you two choose to split the responsibilities is totally up to you.

Where do I fill out a budget for my livestream series application?
Unlike our other STORYHIVE programs, there is no budget requirement to apply. However, successful applicants will be responsible for the proper management of food, gas and travel allotment. Any expenses must be approved by your STORYHIVE Program Manager. You must be able to track and budget accordingly for each live stream and every travel shoot.
How elaborate should my 60-second Pitch Video be?
Create a simple short pitch video shot on your smartphone that tells us about why you wish to join this program and what type of community interviews you wish to do. Do not spend money or resources on the production value of this video. Instead, focus on the content of your pitch. The elevator pitch is one of the most important ways a creator sells their ideas. You and your partner can submit the same 60-second pitch video if you are applying as a team.
What is a Content Plan?
Your plan must include a list of events, people and topics you would like to cover in your community for the month(s) ahead. This can be in the form of a list, calendar, or table. We are looking for a mix of creative approaches and diversity to the stories you are covering for your community at large. At STORYHIVE, we value diversity and inclusion. Accordingly, we support racial diversity and gender parity by ensuring all projects include self-identified females and/or non-binary persons in your roster of interviewees. At least 50% of your interviews should be from self-identified females and/or non-binary persons. A rough draft is all that's needed for the application and if your team is selected you will have a chance to revise this. Your plan will NOT be made public. For the application, you can upload a PDF version of your content plan detailing all the people you wish to interview and why they would be good to interview (maximum of 3 pages). If selected you will be asked to provide more drafts and submit further content plans for each month of the program.
How will successful projects be selected for STORYHIVE On Location?
All eligible submissions undergo a review process by our Selection Committee to determine which projects will receive support. During the selection phase, the Committee evaluates various criteria, such as the overall quality of your application, the Project Lead’s screen presence and hosting potential, and their technical proficiency. Furthermore, we examine your proposed interviewee list to ensure a broad spectrum of perspectives, the potential influence of the grant on your growth as a creator, the local relevance of your Content Plan to your community, and the specific funding limits designated for each region.
What will each selected project receive for STORYHIVE On Location?
Each successful Crew will receive a microgrant (available to BC and Alberta residents only) and equipment from TELUS to produce a live stream show that is a locally reflective interview-based series consisting of approximately a minimum of 15 to 40 episodes (each episode is 1 hour in length each). Each crew will receive training and equipment to learn the ropes of livestream technology. The successful crews and their series will also receive distribution to 1M+ subscribers on select TELUS platforms. The amount of episodes is determined by STORYHIVE’s budget allocation for the community in question.
Do crews get to keep the equipment/gear kit?
All of the gear in the kit is the property of TELUS and will have to be returned by the end of the program by the 1st of August 2027.
I am already a content creator with some experience, and our crew is well-equipped already to stream. Can I use my personal gear?
The kit provided has been thoughtfully put together by our team to work with live streaming. This same kit was tested and used successfully over 4 seasons now by other crews. You are welcome to supplement the kit provided by STORYHIVE with gear of your own. You are responsible for your own equipment, as well as the complete return of TELUS's kit. We cannot guarantee your gear will work with what we have provided. It is your responsibility to test the gear ahead of any interview, including testing any of your equipment for incompatibilities.
I read that a piece of gear called "X" by a "famous camera company" is really good. Can STORYHIVE purchase this for my equipment kit?
Purchases of any equipment outside of the provided kit, are considered an expense outside of the program and must be pre-approved by your STORYHIVE Program Manager. Any gear approved and purchased this way will be the property of TELUS. However, the grant we provide you is yours and once disbursed can be used towards personal equipment purchases.
I read you need good internet speeds, but my internet is slow. What can I do?
Our recommendation is to have an internet speed between 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps or higher. You will need the internet to receive and send email, do research, use Google Suite, and apps that may support content creation. First, determine your internet speed by visiting www.speedtest.net. Slow internet speeds will not make you ineligible to apply and be selected. Once selected as a crew member, we recommend you speak to your STORYHIVE Program Manager about your internet speed.
What can participants expect from the training in this program?
We will train each crew on the basics of interviewing, livestreaming, the Business of Livestreaming, using the gear kit (including Camera and YouTube), moderating content and delivering to a broadcaster. This will also be included in the Creator Kit provided.
How much travel will I be doing?
In your application please select the potential communities that you are able to produce content for. You must be able to produce content for and travel between these communities as needed. You should expect to be doing a lot of travel within the communities you have indicated. We will be selecting candidates to travel to regions which won’t be too far from where they reside. International travel, or travel to parts of Canada is not allowed.
What does it mean to be locally reflective?
For projects to be locally reflective, they must focus on people, topics, or events that are relevant and connected to the applicant’s community and region of residence. (Note: The applicants’ residences must be located within one of the communities eligible for STORYHIVE funding. Please refer to the list of communities that are eligible for STORYHIVE On Location before applying).
Whom should I interview for On Location?
Think local. Speak to your next-door business. Interview a community festival director. Learn a new skill from a craftsman. Interview a community leader or charitable organization. The sky is the limit. While we love your friends and family as much as you do, we are looking for you to get out of your comfort zone.
What rights do I need for any materials used in my Coverage?
If selected, Crews must be able to provide a complete, clean and unencumbered chain of title (proof of rights ownership) for all of the livestreams they produce and record, and must enter into a Grant Agreement with TELUS STORYHIVE. The applicant must have and retain all necessary release forms and the rights to all the music (including synchronization and master use rights) and all other material including logos and signage, interviews, performances, etc. in your recordings.
How many hours will I spend in prep vs. how many hours will I spend livestreaming?
That depends on how much experience you have preparing multiple projects and organizing your reporting plans. There will be a portion of your week structured by our STORYHIVE team to ensure you are meeting your deliveries, the rest of the time you will be in the field streaming and engaging with your community. A rough estimate of 50/50 is the average.
I’m a STORYHIVE Alumni and have experience making films, but live streaming is new to me. Can I still apply?
Absolutely! Live streaming is a new media and creative skill; its foundations are in television, filmmaking and broadcasting (all the screen-based industries). Show us what you’ve got in your application and maybe you'll be the one!
I'm a Summer Crew or On Location alumnus. Can I apply again for 2027?
You are welcome to apply. Previous acceptance to On Location or Summer Crew does not guarantee acceptance into On Location 2027.
I’m currently the recipient of an ongoing funded project through STORYHIVE or TELUS originals, can I still apply?
Unfortunately, we won’t be able to fund those currently being funded in other TELUS programs. However, we do encourage you to consider applying for a future iteration of this program.
I am currently applying to STORYHIVE Three Part Docuseries Edition, but also considering applying for the next Video Podcast and Voices programs. I notice On Location 2026 will be done before these programs start. Can I apply? Will there be any conflict if I am accepted to both? Do I risk becoming ineligible to any program if I apply to all?
No, you will not be ineligible for applying to all programs at the same time. While we cannot fund someone currently receiving funding, we can only select someone for On Location after they have finished with the STORYHIVE Editions, Voices and Video Podcast programs. If you choose to be selected for On Location before Three Part Docuseries Editions starts, know that you will be asked to choose between the two as these programs overlap with their production timelines happening more or less at the same time. You cannot be a fully funded active participant of Editions, Voices or Video Podcast who has already signed a grant agreement.
I am an international person living in Canada under a student, worker, or visitor visa / permit, can I apply?
Unfortunately, CRTC guidelines ask us to provide funding towards Canadian citizens and permanent residents only. You are welcome to volunteer or work with a funded Project Lead.
I am a parent and my children want to be a part of the On Location. Can we apply?
Participants receiving the grant should be of 18 or over, so children cannot apply directly. While your children can support you and be involved, as parents (or guardians) you would be solely responsible for all equipment, tasks and deliverables. However, this program is intensive, mostly self-guided and could take up a lot of your time and effort.
I am thinking of applying with a friend that lives in a different province or another community that you STORYHIVE also supports. Can we apply as a pair?
STORYHIVE On Location cannot support a crew made up of individuals living in separate communities who plan to be travelling between each other’s residences. For this reason, creators applying to be in the same crew must reside within the same community. If you have a friend or partner living elsewhere, we recommend that each of you apply separately. Volunteers or contractors hired by the Project Lead can be residents of any community, and compensation for this work must be determined outside of TELUS STORYHIVE.
Tell me more about the travel opportunities! Where are we going and what are the details?
Travel is optional and by invitation only. We cannot guarantee you will get to travel to any of the regions and communities you choose in your application. You are simply highlighting to us that you would like to travel if given the chance. Every year we support differing numbers of communities in B.C. and A.B. and the creators who reside there. We will know more about who can travel (if at all) once all applications are in and what kind of support we can provide based on the final number of creators chosen and from what regions. More information will be given out only to the selected crews before they confirm participation. Tell us where you think you can reasonably travel to. A full list of our eligible communities can be found above.
When will I know if my Crew is selected?
Only selected candidates will be contacted for an interview, at the latest to start our collaboration on Oct 1, 2026.
What accessibility accommodations does STORYHIVE offer for content creators?
