1. Am I eligible to apply?
You must be the age of majority in your province (18 in Alberta, 19 in B.C.) and be a Canadian resident. Other team members don’t need to be Canadian. Applications must be submitted as an individual—not a business or nonprofit—though you can still collaborate with organizations.
2. Can I apply if I already have a podcast?
Yes, existing podcasts are eligible! But all episodes submitted must be new content created for the program. STORYHIVE is looking for projects that are fresh, locally relevant and showcase your passion, even if you already have experience producing content.
3. What kinds of stories, themes and topics are you looking for?
There’s no “golden topic”! Focus on stories that matter to your community, showcase authentic voices and bring something new to the table. Underrepresented voices can be highlighted, but they must be involved meaningfully in telling their own stories. Topics should adhere to G or PG ratings—religious or political commentary are not eligible.
4. How do I submit a strong application?
Your pitch video should show you and your host, explain your project and express why it matters to you. Be authentic, relatable and clear about why you’re the right creator for the project. Common mistakes we see include incomplete applications, not following eligibility rules or failing to appear on camera.
5. What support and training will I receive?
STORYHIVE provides extensive training over several online sessions covering technical, broadcasting and licensing requirements. Program Managers and industry experts guide you on equipment, lighting, audio and production best practices. This support ensures even first-time creators can succeed!
6. Can I work on this while holding a full-time job or solo?
Yes, but plan for a commitment of 5–10 hours per week. Projects can be completed solo, but having a small team is recommended for technical tasks like filming, editing and sound. Being organized and managing your time will be crucial.
7. What equipment and budget considerations should I keep in mind?
Equipment depends on your production goals! Some essentials might include a camera or smartphone, a microphone, lighting, tripods and external storage. Include realistic costs in your budget; STORYHIVE funding is designed to help you get started and produce professional-quality content.
8. Who owns the content, and can I publish it elsewhere?
You retain all intellectual property. STORYHIVE has a 10-year broadcast license to show your content on TELUS platforms. You can publish your episodes elsewhere, but it’s recommended to wait until STORYHIVE completes its marketing and distribution to maximize your reach.
9. How are applications selected?
Applications are reviewed in multiple rounds by moderation and selection committees. Community feedback plays a key role. The selection committee looks for feasibility, focus, originality and audience relevance. The most compelling projects are those that are realistic, well-planned and resonate with the community.
10. What’s the timeline for approval to filming?
After being selected for funding, the process usually takes 2–3 months, including contracting, scheduling and training. Training must be completed before filming begins, and all episodes must be created post-training to meet licensing requirements.
