Takeaways from TELUS STORYHIVE Three-Part Docuseries Edition “Ask Us Anything” Sessions
Posted on May 11, 2026In April, we hosted “Ask Us Anything” sessions on YouTube and Reddit for our TELUS STORYHIVE Three-Part Docuseries Edition. We answered all your burning questions, covering many areas including eligibility, documentary topics and genres, what we look for in a pitch video and more!
Ready to apply? Here’s a recap of some of your great questions!
Catch the full recording of the live event now on TELUS Optik TV, Stream+ and STORYHIVE’s YouTube channel. And check out our Reddit AMA for additional Q&A items!
1. Am I eligible to apply?
There are more things to consider when it comes to eligibility: You must be the age of majority in your province (18 in Alberta, 19 in B.C.) and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Other team members don’t need to be Canadian. You must be a resident of one of the eligible communities (see the Submission Rules for a list of eligible communities) and you must be a new or emerging content creator. Applications must be submitted as an individual—not a business or nonprofit—though you can still collaborate with organizations.
2. If the grant doesn’t cover all the expenses, can we try to raise funds or find funding from other sources?
Generally, you can include funds raised through crowdfunding or grants specifically designated for new or emerging content creators. However, some funding sources (like the Canada Media Fund) are not compatible with STORYHIVE funding, so if you are thinking of applying for any additional grants, please check with us first to ensure they can be combined with our funding. Another thing to keep in mind is that the obligations of any additional funding must not conflict with the terms of the STORYHIVE grant agreement, primarily that the project must premiere on TELUS Optik TV and that TELUS is granted a 10-year non-exclusive licence for the program.
3. What kinds of stories, themes and topics are you looking for?
There’s no “golden topic”! We’re drawn to documentaries that spotlight people and ideas making a real difference, such as stories about individuals and organizations creating meaningful change. We’re especially excited by community-driven stories—projects that are locally rooted and shaped by the voices of the people they represent. Topics should adhere to G or PG ratings. Religious or political commentary is not eligible.
4. What are you looking for in a pitch video?
We are looking for a 55-65 second pitch video that tells us about you and your project! This is a chance for you to share the passion and excitement that you have for your project. This does not need to be an elaborate production. It can be as simple as filming yourself with your phone.
5. Is it acceptable for my documentary to explore a topic that has been covered in other films, provided I bring a different perspective or approach?
Yes! If you plan to explore a topic that has already been covered extensively, tell us in your application what is new and unique about your approach and perspective and why you are the one to tell the story in this way. Also, tell us why this story and approach would resonate with your local community. Whether bringing new stories to light or exploring older themes and topics, at STORYHIVE, we are always looking for authentic local storytelling that brings unique and diverse perspectives.
6. How are applications selected?
Applications are reviewed in multiple rounds by moderation and selection committees. Community feedback plays a key role. The selection committee looks for feasibility, focus, originality and audience relevance. The most compelling projects are those that are realistic, well-planned and resonate with the community.
7. Who owns the content, and can I publish it elsewhere?
You retain all intellectual property. STORYHIVE has a 10-year non-exclusive broadcast license to show your content on TELUS platforms. You can publish your episodes elsewhere, but it’s recommended to wait until STORYHIVE completes its marketing and distribution to maximize your reach.
