Coffee to the People
The banks say they’re “too young, dumb, and broke” but two queer Pilipinx youth are daring to thrive, with Intent Coffee
Pitch video
Synopsis
Coffee is the most popular beverage consumed in the Global North, but is grown almost exclusively by the Global South. Why are these countries still impoverished? Why don’t we hear about the price fluctuation of coffee in the media? Why don’t we hear about the effects of climate change in relations to the mass migration of Black, Indigenous and Brown peoples? The production of coffee continues to be steeped in a long history of colonialism, food insecurity, exploitation and environmental degradation. Coffee to the People will explore how Intent Coffee is advancing a more equitable, sustainable and inclusive coffee industry by uplifting Indigenous coffee producers in the Philippines and how they are hiring, investing and empowering racialized and marginalized folx in Amiskwaciy (Edmonton).
