Turning the Tide will leave you feeling educated, alive, strong, and moved. It will not be despairing or dividing – it’s about coming together which satisfies a deep-rooted and often forgotten human need.
This film is about revealing the softness in the hard places. Soft focus and natural lighting will be critical to visually supporting the themes and poetry of the story.
The vibrant blues and greens of this coastline will be emphasized to highlight how the lands and sea provide abundance to the world. We are looking to weave animation into the film, featuring a unique watercolour-type style to add more feeling to the facts and historical moments.
Sound is critical to connecting these stories as well as bringing wild places to life on the screen. Music is the shared journey. By weaving together the voices of humpback whales, Indigenous artists, and Luke Wallace, we will explore how people are using their voices to invite the coast to sing along.
Pacing will be intentionally dynamic, flowing between more fast-paced radical moments of energy and momentum and long breaths as we take time to relish in moments of patience and awe. Whale migration footage, coverage of our characters reflecting, and drone work will be held in order to give our audiences time to reflect and breathe between chapters.
Janie & Yoda's part of the story will take place predominantly on or by the sea. Luke's part of the story will take place mostly in his garden and at his homestead on Salt Spring Island, while also following him to performances and gatherings in Vancouver and beyond. The Indigenous Frontline to be featured in Turning the Tide will bring our audience to witness the power of their territories, highlighting how the lands are at the heart of their healing and their journey.
