    Synopsis

    Solidarity Film Camp (working title) tells the story of a film camp for marginalized youth (ages 14-24). It's a multi-weekend camp being created by myself (Andrea Beça) and an incredible team of colleagues with the goal of educating and empowering marginalized youth to share their stories with the world through film. At the heart of the story, we really want to focus on two things: how absolutely crucial it is, especially in our political climate, to empower marginalized voices and let them speak rather than speaking for them, and how critical the arts and storytelling are to shaping the world, moving people, entertaining people, comforting people, and organizing and encouraging people to create social change!

    This documentary is being made by often marginalized members of the Edmonton film community to shed light on and empower young, marginalized, emerging voices in the Edmonton film community. We truly are stronger together!

    It is our hope that this documentary will not only open doors for the youth who take part in the film camp, but also for youth who watch the finished project. We also hope that it inspires adults in the film community (and all arts communities!) to mentor and empower the emerging voices in their industry. Especially those voices coming from folks who don't look like them!

    Edmonton has been a leader in the arts - and so many other things - for so long. We are proud to showcase not only Edmontonians, but also amazing local spaces and places, in this documentary. Not sure we could get any more Edmonton than that.

    This space is large, welcoming, and has so many visually stunning nooks and crannies that are perfect for filming in. Perhaps most importantly, its owners are some of the biggest supporters of local business and the arts I have ever met! I think it would be the perfect location for the camp itself, and therefore for the majority of our filming.

    This documentary will have a very unscripted and raw feel to it, as though the audience is a fly on the wall at the film camp. We'll watch the next generation of filmmakers as they find their voices and learn how to share their stories - without feeling like they're on camera, performing.

    The documentary will also include a number of intimate interviews, to dig into why storytelling is so important to both camp participants and workshop leaders, and how they think they can create social change through filmmaking.
