A faceless evil has torn the wings off a radiant faerie who must vanquish her perceived lack of wholeness to claim them
PAN'S LABYRINTH meets ALICE IN WONDERLAND in TALES FOR FAERIES. This is not a children's story. Set in a twisted, dark, land of magic, we watch as Voluptas, a once radiant faerie, struggles to find her way and her wings. Along the journey, she meets a strange cast of characters including a cat-child, a wizened riddle-filled elderly woman, and a being who can only ask questions. This short deals with complicated themes told through fantasy and imagery, opening the imagination and filling it with wonder. Written as if it were 'folklore for non-humans,' Tales for Faeries gives us a glimpse into another world with fantastical elements while staying grounded in a very 'human' emotional journey of overcoming that feeling of not being enough just as we are.
We have an incredible team attached. A lot of us have worked together on previous projects and are excited to get to dig into something so expansive and world-building.
An elderly woman. A teacher, a guide, a mentor. She will only help Voluptas if the faerie earns it.
We will be using beautiful North Vancouver forests as our main backdrop. All of our indoor and outdoor locations locked and ready for action.
This is a very visual story that will be told through heavy metaphor and art design. Our production designer has pulled this off with excellent skill on previous projects. We are extremely excited to have her on board to bring the look of this film to life.
We will use the contrast between light and dark to tell our tale as well as VFX to bring disastrous elements to the screen.
Our VFX artist will be removing the wires / puppetry to bring the faerie wings to life. On the left is before and on the right is after his process. See the pitch video for a moving preview of his previous work.
Between the misty clouds that roll in over Capilano Bridge to the mossy mystical trees at the University, our story is idyllically set in the uniquely forested and mystical world of North Vancouver. Vancouver’s North Shore Tourism is behind this project too, collaborating by sharing the beautiful content we’ll capture with the world. Together we’ll reach new audiences, positioning North Vancouver as not only a beautiful dramatic town to visit but also a magical one. Tourism NS Vancouver is active over Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and present with over 10K followers.
As a female-lead film, we’ll share challenges and gain insights from the strong community of women in film over Twitter and Instagram. Plus, while only 8% of directors in the film industry are female, we’re excited to contribute to shaking that percentage. Our Director, Meeshelle Neal served on the Board Women in Film and Television in Vancouver, bringing her connections to our west-coast community. Through various social networks, we'll not only connect with Vancouver’s keen sensibility to promote women in film but also with the movement promoting women in key positions around the world.
As James Baldwin put it, 'The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers'. Artists will play an important role in merging realistic elements of the script with a dark twisted fantasy of this story. These artists are individuals who have built their brands and careers off their own work and style. They have a unique imprint in their entertainment and cultural community. In connecting with them over social media, we'll scoop up new audiences and also get the chance to showcase their work.
