An aging super spy adapts to life in rural Saskatchewan.
Climax, SK is a comedy that merges small town Canadian life with the suspenseful and ridiculous world of international espionage. The web-series focuses on Jim Dash, a spy who moves to Climax while on the run from assassins. Jim continues to live his life the only way he knows how: enjoying fine food, seducing beautiful women, and driving exotic cars -- but none of that is easy in Climax, SK.
Have you ever stirred a glass of twenty year old scotch with a freshly fired revolver? These people have.
The classic spy hero pushed twenty years past his prime. His athleticism and cunning intellect is faltering even though he’s convinced he hasn’t lost a step. Like James Bond, Jim is passionate about anything that combines exquisite luxury and exotic flair: gastronomy, fashion, wild game hunting, exotic fighting techniques, and high stakes gambling.
The pragmatic and logical straight man. He allows Jim to live in his guest bedroom – a decision he regrets almost immediately. Kevin is jealous of people like Jim who manage to go through life without a care or a worry. Jim teaches Kevin how to be spontaneous and how to live life without worrying about consequences.
The eccentric townie. He’s always eager to help Jim with whatever scheme he has thought up – even though he is not good at following-through. At first Rob seems like a two dimensional sidekick, but as we learn more about him we realize he is an extremely loyal and emotionally complex character with lots of redeeming qualities.
Kevin’s best friend and confidant. Lisa works at the local tavern and doesn’t put up with much—an attitude perfect for dealing with town drunks. She functions primarily as a sounding board for Kevin’s complaints about Jim and although she can have a sympathetic ear, her advice to Kevin is usually something that escalates the predicament because she is bored with small town life.
Our hope is to film portions of the show in the town of Climax, SK in order to create authenticity and generate interest. Similar to the way Jim and the town band together, we hope to garner a relationship with the town that will be beneficial to all parties. We intend to let the town be apart of the web-series and make them feel like it is as much theirs as it is ours.
We are lucky to have veteran actors like Mackenzie Gray involved who will take on a mentor role to younger actors and crew. We also have show creators that have worked as crew members on everything from The Revenant to Juno. We hope to hire many newcomers to the industry and train them as we work.
Corner Gas had been a favorite in Canada for over a decade. We intend to bring the same level of humour as Corner Gas and develop our characters to the same degree. Of course, our show will include action and espionage, which will only broaden the reach of our audience.
Mackenzie Gray has enjoyed a very long and successful acting career and with movies like “Man of Steel”, “Shooter”, and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. Recently he has had roles on hit shows like “Legion” and “Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency”. He is a fixture at comic book conventions, film festivals and has a large following locally and internationally. Having Mackenzie Gray in “Climax, SK” will definitely be a draw for audiences.
The proof of concept teaser trailer we released earlier this year spread remarkably fast and generated an enormous amount of support. With this came connections with local media and companies eager to support our show. We learned that the people of Saskatchewan are excited that one of their small towns could be featured in an upcoming web-series.
We have been contacted by Fred Ewanuick (of Corner Gas fame) who has offered to help us reach the already well-established Corner Gas fan base. He has even expressed interest in playing a part in the web series and we have written the character of “Ivan”, Jim’s KGB handler and adversary, with him in mind.
The popular Facebook page “Meanwhile in Saskatchewan” is excited to work with us. They want to post our episodes and any additional content we provide. They currently have nearly 80,000 followers and have a proven track record. Within two hours of our trailer being posted, we garnered over 10,000 views. Our video has now been viewed over 55,000 times and their post has reached more than 120,000 people. Their interest in our project makes our partnership a logical fit.
The first step in our distribution strategy will be to utilize our preexisting relationship with our media contacts to promote the launch of Climax, SK. This will be easy for us as we organically made contact with the aforementioned reporters and personalities during our campaign earlier this year and they are all onboard to do a story come our first airdate. Therefore, once we have our launch date firmly in place, our media contacts will publicize said date and get us well on our way.
