A woman, torn with a big decision, flees her apartment in the middle of the night to rendezvous with wise 9-year old girl named Emy and an A.I. deer named Jane. What unfolds from there, changes her reality forever.
Jillian needs to make a major life change. An indestructible CGI deer named Edgar becomes her guide.
A recently engaged Jillian is doing everything possible to distract herself from reality. In search of some much needed space, she spends the night at her best friend Natalie's place. Pulling an all-nighter playing Grand Theft Auto V with her best friend’s daughter (Emy), Jillian becomes enchanted with an indestructible deer, Edgar Allen Doe, that’s trapped in the video game. As her holographic obsession deepens, it begins to unravel her 3D reality. When the sun rises, everything has changed.
Our team is like the CGI deer that inspired this film: Purpose-Driven, Passionate & Indestructible. To Storyhive and to you, we offer our experience, our dedication to excellence, and our gratitude. Run with us.
"And sometimes when things clear away, you're not watching anything, you're in your car, and you start going, 'OH NO, no, here it comes. That I'm alone.' It's starts to visit you. Just this sadness. Life is tremendously sad, just by being in it...That's why we text and drive." JILLIAN quotes LOUIS CK
“A woman who walks in purpose doesn’t have to chase people or opportunities, her light causes people and opportunities to pursue her.” NATALIE quotes ANNE NWAKAMA
"Why do people talk all the time? It seems like there's so much talking. There is no space left for me to be. Be here, with my deer, just wandering Los Santos, and watching the sunrise." EMY quotes EMY
Edgar is a fully autonomous deer roaming the streets of San Andreas in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Randomly teleporting to new locations every few minutes, he is looking for his missing wife Virginia. He has trouble navigating fences and hedges, getting stuck frequently, but never giving up. Occasionally, shenanigans ensue; he's escaped car accidents without a scratch, swims the ocean, and even neutralizes conflicts among video game players + other AI beings inhabiting the game.
We want to connect with and support the local community in a tangible way. We aim to do this by initiating a Female Directors Screening Night at a local Vancouver theatre. We'll produce a full night of short films directed by women, inviting other Storyhive funded projects to join us. We then have a secret (not so secret) plan to pitch the entire program across Canada to independent theatres. #INVOLVE
Supported by Katrin Bowen's existing connections to Film Festivals worldwide, we want to apply to top choices: TIFF, Cannes, Berlinale, Sundance, as well as esteemed short film festival Clermont Ferrand & others. #IMPACT
THE DEER artistically investigates themes of longing, loneliness, and technology in our world today. The effects of LCD Screens + technology on our relationships, children, and selves; and how these advancements enhance + mute the wonders of life. With no intention to label it good or bad, we aim to authentically #REFLECT what we see in ourselves and our community. (Check out Louis CK's THE FOREVER EMPTY on YOUTUBE if you feel like crying + laughing at the same time).
We want to give our local media the information they need to provide engaging coverage. We'll create a homebase website for THE DEER as a selling tool and pitch a full media kit to all relevant media outlets during filming & later in distribution that includes: stills, b-roll, interviews, press days & behind-the-scenes EPK. This will also increase reach to our potential audiences + specific communities of interest: gamers, visual artists, emerging female filmmakers. #REPRESENT
Our mini-docs, interviews, & behind the scenes content is made with these audience members in mind. In addition to our short film, we aim to provide extra online content that is useful, inspiring, + well-made. *all deer pictures provided by #GTAVPhotographer @happy_heart14 on TWITTER
There's an entire community on REDDIT dedicated to Edgar the deer [created by brilliant visual artist Brent Watanabe, who's very much in support of our short film]! Feature interviews w/ Watanabe can be found on CBC, BBC, in New York Magazine, Wired, & more. This film is an exceptional opportunity to showcase how different artistic mediums can inspire each other.
Working alongside a composer with Indie Music sensibilities, the score for THE DEER is going to be LIT. Think of the electro down-tempo soundtrack of DRIVE - fluid, pulsing, original, yet iconic. Hypnotic + Transportive. Further inspiring instrumentation delivered by BLADE RUNNER + STRANGER THINGS. Music is the secret weapon.
A major key demographic for THE DEER is women. The overall aim is to make a film that appeals to all humans, but our story features three females and their potent perspectives on the world today. We anticipate these characters, and the overall story of THE DEER will be resonant + impactful for females between 13 and 35.
