Lisa Walker

I am a whale song theorist. I apply my background in music to study the most amazing song of the humpback whale. My premise is that human music and whale song share a fundamental organization that unites both our "musics". I have a strong background in field research, documenting the behaviors and acoustics of the humpback in its summer feeding grounds of the North Pacific as well as its wintering breeding grounds of Hawaii. I work closely with scientists, including SETI, to decipher whale communication. My CD, Grooved Whale, is based on the logic of whale song and marks my first attempt at how we might map our understanding of music to investigate the logic of whale song. It is my goal to raise awareness of this species' requirement for a quiet ocean in which to sing.
