Synopsis

Destined to work as a low-level dishwasher in a greasy diner, Max’s dreams of becoming a professional chef take one step closer to reality when he is accepted into a prestigious cooking academy. Secretly staying late after work in order to perfect his craft, he soon finds improvement doesn’t come as easily as anticipated. Hopeless, it isn’t until an unlikely alliance is forged with Kyla, a guileless, young prostitute from the area that the solution is revealed: her culinary expertise in exchange for the regular meals he provides.

Storyboard 1 — Opening Visuals

Storyboard 1 — Opening Visuals

WE OPEN our story directly in the heat and sizzle of a busy diner kitchen during the lunch rush. Located on the outskirts of the city, the diner caters to middle-class blue collar workers. The sense of life as a daily struggle will be predominant.

Storyboard 2— Kyla Prepares for Work

Storyboard 2— Kyla Prepares for Work

In this panel we see Kyla preparing for the night. It's an interesting moment that comes in direct contrast with Max, who earlier also prepared for his own 'occupation,' so to speak. Kyla is a symbol of innocence in a destructive world.

Storyboard 3 — Max Meets Kyla (Part 1)

This first meeting between Max and Kyla establishes an unexpected, natural chemistry. It's a genuinely chance meeting that leaves us the feeling greater forces may be at work. Here, after playfully flirting, Kyla vulnerably confesses her hunger. Without thought, Max surrenders the food he'd prepared for himself earlier — a small but generous act that sets in motion events that ultimately change the course of their lives.

Storyboard 5 — The Culinary Academy

Max's dreams of becoming more than just a dishwasher take one step closer to reality when he is inducted into a prestigious culinary academy. Overwhelmed, unprepared, nervous.... Max soon learns he is way over his head.

Storyboard 6 — An Impulse Decision

Storyboard 6 — An Impulse Decision

Having learned early on Kyla has the extraordinary ability to distinguish the nuances of flavours in cooking, Max takes her advice and impulsively adds a little more salt to his assignment. The results both surprise him and reinforce the notion he just might have an ace up his sleeve with Kyla.

Storyboard 7 — The Candlelight Dinner

After working day and night (and following a dangerous exchange with her Kyla's Handler), Max is finally able to afford her for the evening. Escorting her back to his dilapadated apartment, he surprises her with a candlelit dinner for two, and proceeds to serve her dish after experimental dish in an effort to learn as much as she is willing to share about the nuances of food and life— and quite possibly love.

Storyboard 9 — Max's Kitchenette

After a warm evening of delicious food and conversation, Kyla finds herself temporarily alone in his apartment. Looking around, she sees the peeling wallpaper, the damaged floors and gets a better snapshot of Max's own struggles. Hearing to the sound of washing, she rises to investigate and discovers something amazing: Max has transformed his small kitchenette into an extraordinary pantry of freshly hanging herbs, infused oils, fresh foods and spices — and we see firsthand this humble room is a visual metaphor for Max's innermost heart.
